Full License via Residency- What training qualifies
- Per Iowa Admin. Code 481—572.4(153), a foreign-school graduate demonstrates education substantially equivalent to a DDS/DMD by ONE of: (1) ≥2 academic years of undergraduate supplemental dental education at an accredited school + an equivalent degree; (2) a postgraduate general practice residency of AT LEAST ONE academic year at an accredited dental college; or (3) a board-approved credential evaluation showing substantial equivalency (no residency required).

Code 481—572.4(153) (primary rule, read 2026-08-06, eff. 4/9/25): a 1-year postgraduate GPR at an accredited dental college is one of three qualifying routes; a board-approved credential evaluation showing substantial equivalency is another (no residency needed). The rule names "general practice residency" specifically — a CODA AEGD is not named, so AEGD eligibility is unconfirmed. Also requires transcript, home-country licensure verification, TOEFL (top level each section), and either recent practice or a clinical exam within 3 years. Iowa Dental Board (Angela Davidson, DIAL, 2026-08-05): "A CODA accredited GPR program would satisfy the board's education requirement for a foreign trained dentist."
